The Abbey of Santa Maria del Bosco, a prime example of Benedictine and Olivetan architecture in Italy, is set amidst the Riserva naturale orientata Monte Genuardo e Santa Maria del Bosco in the territory belonging to Contessa Entellina (PA) which is 3 km distant.
The monastery was built between 1592 and 1646 by Olivetan Cistercian Fathers. It features two classical style square cloisters with central fountains, respectively from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Part of the monastery is today an agricultural business which has contributed to the preservation of its structure. However, the 1968 earthquake in Belice seriously damaged the church and the ecclesiastically-owned part of the monastery. In addition to the effects of the earthquake, more damage was reported in 1970-72 and 1980-81.
