The medieval borgo of Castiglione di Sicilia (CT) stands on a hill between the Alcantara valley and the park of Mount Etna in a panoramic position overlooking fruit orchards and lava flows.
The ruins of the so-called Lion Castle (Castello del Leone) are situated on a rock with the historical centre below. Previously the summer residence of the noble Ruggero di Lauria, the functions of the different buildings in the Norman-Swabian construction are all identifiable: stables, hay barns, the lord’s apartment, the prison.
The symbol of Castiglione is a 14th century lookout tower known as cannizzu. The borgo, with medieval layout, has narrow alleys that converge on the main square. Over 30 churches are scattered around the residential centre, including the cuba, a Basilian church in Byzantine style dedicated to St. Domenica; the 17th century Church of St. Anthony Abbot whose bell tower has a bulb shaped cupola and the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Chain.
