Crowned by a majestic castle, the borgo of Montalbano Elicona (ME) rises on a plain surrounded by the Nebrodi forests which are several hundred years old. The appellative Helikon, from the legendary mountain of the Greek muses, was added to its early name whose etymology probably derives from mons albus, a nod to the thick layer of snow that covers it in winter.
The many buildings in the historical centre include: the 12th century cathedral - Basilica di Santa Maria Assunta e San Nicolò Vescovo; the Church of St. Catherine; and several residential buildings with beautiful sculpted portals.
The castle, with its medieval layout, was enlarged and transformed into a residence during the Aragon dominion and was one of Frederick II’s favourite places: the Byzantine chapel inside is interesting and well preserved.
The territory around Montalbano Elicona is a vast area of pristine nature dotted with tholos, prehistoric buildings used as shelters by shepherds in the past. Other interesting places nearby include the ancient forest of Malabotta and the megaliths in the natural park of Argimusco.
