Caltabellotta is an ancient hillside borgo in the Agrigento hinterland whose name derives from the Arabic Qal’at-al-ballut, castle of the Oak. The Normans built a fortress here. The village stands at 950 m up Mount Kratas, on the southern side of the Sicani mountains, and is characterised by steep alleyways, paved streets, and small squares with stone arches. The Hermitage of St. Peregrine, built on the rock in the 17th century above the ruins of a Norman building, is located in the upper part, Terravecchia. Legend has it that the saint lived here in a cave. The site offers a magnificent view of the valley below. Positioned in the rocks, the little Church of Santa Maria della Pietà, with its characteristic pitched roof was built on a previous Byzantine-era building.
