Randazzo (province of Catania), medieval in origin and culture with contributions from the Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Normans and Aragonese, is known as the black city because of the volcanic stone that paves its streets and decorates churches, portals and arches. It stands on the Northern slope of Mount Etna and dominates the valley of Alcantara.
Traces of the medieval borgo can be seen in the 13th century entrance gates – porta San Giuliano, porta San Martino –, via degli Archi, crowned by a row of arches in decorated stone, and in the many Norman-Swabian churches. The castle, a 13th century fortress, stands on a rock of lava stone and today houses the Museo delle arti contadine. The Norman Basilica of Santa Maria, from the 13th century, was built in volcanic stone with majestic decorated apses and a portal in 14th century Gothic Catalan style.
