The evocative Abbey of St. Mary of Calena which stands close to the sea in the countryside outside Peschici, in the Gargano peninsula, is one of the most ancient in Italy. The Abbey was built in 872 as a Benedictine monastery and for much of its history was a wealthy, independent centre.
Legend has it that there is treasure hidden in the Abbey, buried with a daughter of the Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. There are also rumours that the Abbey was formerly connected to the sea through a secret, haunted passage. However, this passage could really have existed and would have allowed the monks to escape in times of danger towards the sea and the Abbey delle Tremiti.
