Construction on the Abbey of San Vito, in the hamlet of that name in Polignano a Mare (BA), began in the 10th century. The original Benedictine structure underwent successive modifications over time, resulting in the present building with its significant Baroque additions. A three nave Romanesque church was built on the ruins of a Roman tower and subsequently modified with the construction of the monastery. The external staircase which leads up to the loggia overlooking the sea is particularly evocative and striking. The Abbey complex was built on what was the ancient Apaneste, a staging post on the Via Traiana (Trajan’s way).
