Palazzo dello Spagnolo is a late Baroque building, located in the Rione Sanità, famous for the elaborate staircases that give it the look of a complex set design: a wide entrance that leads to a building.
It was built in 1738 on a commission from Nicola Moscati, Marquis of Poppano. The project, which included the monumental double ramp staircase known as “the falcon’s wings” conceived as a place for social meetings, was entrusted to Ferdinando Sanfelice. Francesco Attanasio designed the rococo stucco decorations which were carried out by Aniello Prezioso.
The Palace is one of the many aristocratic residences built in Naples at the height of its fame as a European capital. Once a symbol of the opulence and power of the nobility, the historical buildings are now part of the urban fabric of a city that is used to remaking its cultural and artistic heritage over the course of its transformations.
