Built in 1738 for King Charles VII of Naples, the Royal Palace of Portici (NA) was used as a summer residence by the royal family.
The façade of the palace is terraced and equipped with balustrades and leads to a large quadrangle. The courtyard to the left holds the barracks of the Royal Guard and the Palatine Chapel. A majestic staircase (1741) leads from the vestibule to the first floor apartment of Caroline Bonaparte.
The palace is located within a large park crossed by avenues, English gardens and works of art such as the Fountain of the Sirens, the Kiosk of King Charles, the Fountain of the Swans and an amphitheatre.
During building work, numerous artefacts from the buried cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii came to light, creating the basis for one of the most famous collections in the world. The archaeological collection was later transferred to Naples but the Palace has conserved its vocation as a research centre as the Faculty of Agriculture of the Università Federico II houses much scientific material here.
