Feltre is a historic borgo in the province of Belluno, enclosed by mountains and perched on a small hill, that has been an important communication hub over the centuries.
Its historical centre is an Alpine city of art set in the Dolomites. Known as the borgo of the Dolomites, Feltre is a small walled town perched on a hill dominated by Alboino Castle which extends between the banks of the river Piaveand the high peaks of the mountains inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The streets of the centre, especially those around the central piazza Maggiore, are filled with ancient noble buildings such as the Palazzo della Ragione, home to the theatre de La Sena (also known as the Little Fenice) and the Rizzarda Gallery of Modern Art which houses Carlo Rizzarda’s wrought iron creations and his collection of decorative arts. The thousand-year history of the town is displayed in the Civic Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the underground archaeological area near the Duomo.
On the first Sunday of August, Feltre holds its Palio which evokes a symbolic ceremony which sealed the town’s link with the Republic of Venice, the handover of the city’s keys to the Ambassador, Nani.
The borgo is also the headquarters of the Dolomiti Bellunesi national park.
