In the forecourt of the Locanda del Glicine Antico is a majestic wisteria that was planted when the villa was built in 1597 and is considered one of the oldest in Europe. In spring, its branches cover the facade with its ancient sundial, with bunches of purpled toned flowers.
The villa belonged to the wife of the painter Giovan Battista Ronchelli and is a typical 18th century Lombard residence, which also conserves elements from earlier centuries. The previous fortified structure, which already existed in 1400, was transformed in 1597 when it became a hunting lodge for the local nobles. Today the structure displays classical architectural lines, porticos, barrel vaulted colonnades, marble fireplaces, reception rooms with brick flooring, Venetian mosaics, frescoes and wooden coffered ceilings.
It is located in the ancient hamlet of Castello Cabiaglio, in the heart of the Valcuvia area, whose origins date to Roman times and where numerous artefacts were found in 1889 including coins and tombs with funerary urns.
