One of the most important palaces in Valtellina, Palazzo Salis in Tirano (SO) has belonged to the same family for centuries, the Counts Sertoli Salis. It develops along a structure with a late 16th century facade, flanked by two towers, with a Baroque central portal created from a design by Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola. The entrance opens onto a portico which leads to the charming inner Italian garden which is one of the best developed in Lombardy and certainly the best known in Valtellina. The palazzo houses a museum circuit of 10 notable frescoed and decorated rooms, all of which have been recently restored, including the so-called Saloncello, an imposing room with splendid frescoes and a meeting point for political power brokers in Valtellina in the 17th and 18th centuries, and the small family baroque church dedicated to St. Charles Borromeo.
