Area Vitali is a space of 89,000m2 at the heart of Turin’s Parco Dora, on the site of the largest steel factory of the Ferriere Fiat complex.
The area is dominated by the imposing structure of the stripping hanger which preserves its tall, red-painted steel pillars and part of the roof. Beneath the large roof is a multipurpose space designed for sporting activities and events, with playing fields (calcetto - 8 a side soccer, tennis, basketball) and skate ramps. A vast garden stretches around the pillars of the old steel factory with an array of flower beds and play areas and a raised walkway in zinc-coated steel. The three cylindrical decantation tanks have also been conserved, transformed from industrial structure to water gardens, as has the water treatment building with four evaporation towers.
A LED lighting arrangement in red runs beneath the walkway, a second in blue beneath the hanger roof and a third in green lights up the four evaporation towers. This lighting system makes the area evocative even in the evening (when it is also floodlit with white lights).
