The Aquarium of Genoa can be found on Ponte Spinola, in the Porto Antico area of Genoa.
The structure, like that of the port area, was designed by the architect Renzo Piano and inaugurated in 1992. With 27,000 m2 of exhibition space, the Aquarium of Genoa is the largest in Italy and third largest in Europe. It houses 70 inside tanks and 4 open air tanks, with 12,000 animal species and 200 plant species.
The tanks allow for observation from two different points: above the water and beneath it from special glass tunnels. Twice a day, visitors can watch the dolphins being fed, while once a month the Aquarium opens for night time visits or special events like “A night with the sharks”.
