The Porto Antico area of Genoa, now the lively cultural and tourist centre of the city, was the crossroads of commerce in the Mediterranean for centuries. The 230,000m² area became a symbol of modernity and innovation in the 1990s with urban planning designed by the architect Renzo Piano.
There are numerous bars, shops, restaurants and night clubs in the area, which also includes the 16th century Porta Siberia; the Acquarium of Genoa at Ponte Spinola, with 70 tanks holding 400 different species; the Bigo, a 40m panoramic lift designed by Renzo Piano that reproduces the cranes used by container ships in the past; the Piazza delle Feste, a large space on the dock behind the Millo building used for concerts and events; the Neptune Galleon, a reproduction galleon used in Roman Polanski’s film Pirates and Galata — Il Museo del Mare, which has a life-sized reproduction Genovese galley ship and interactive exhibits.
