Genoa, administrative centre of the region of Liguria, has the biggest harbour in Italy and one of the most important in Europe within the metropolitan confines of the city.
Its historical centre, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, has a thick network of densely-populated “caruggi”, alleyways that snake between tall residential buildings. On the hills above the centre are the middle-class neighbourhoods of Carignano and Castelletto, and the working-class areas of Lagaccio and Oregina.
Genoa’s many noble buildings are very interesting, such as Palazzo San Giorgio, Palazzo della Nuova Borsa in piazza De Ferrari and the ancient Ducal Palace, today an exhibition and cultural centre.
The city’s most recent development can be seen in the area of the old Port, location for the Aquarium, designed by Renzo Piano, the largest in Italy and one of the biggest in Europe, and the futuristic Bolla and Bigo structures, in addition the tourist harbour in the Marina has been extended.
Running perpendicular to the coastline outside the city centre is val Polcevera with a residential centre on the left bank and industrial and commercial activities on the right. Small villages of ancient origin can be found in the hilliest areas, while val Bisagno is huddled between the mountains.
