The Parco Nazionale Foreste Casentinesi, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2018, is located in the Tuscan-Romagnolo Appenines. The Park, which has an extraordinary diversity of plants and wildlife, extends over 38,000 hectares from Monte Falterona to Passo dei Mandrioli.
There are ancient hermitages and monasteries hidden in the woods, such as La Verna and Camaldoli; waterfalls, like those of Acquacheta; historical centres like Castagno d’Andrea (FI) surrounded by chestnut trees; the source of the Arno river at Monte Falterona; the Lago degli Idoli, a place of worship for the Etruscans and a significant archaeological site today, and the Lago di Ponte, a manmade expanse of water set in an area of the park that is filled with footpaths.
