Built in the 16th century in the area of the foro boario (cattle market), at the end of the Albericiane walls, Piazza Alberica is the largest historical square in Carrara. In its centre is a fountain with a marble basin and lion, over which looms a statue of Maria Beatrice d’Este, Duchess of Massa and Carrara. The piazza is lined with 17th century palaces including Palazzo delle Logge and Palazzo dei Conti del Medico whose façade stands out for its red colouring and marble ornamentation. Worthy of note is the paving, with inlaid marble from the nearby quarries of the Apuan Alps.
