Restored in 2015, the Silk Museum in Mendicino is located in the Eugenio Gaudio spinning mill, an ancient building situated on a rib of the local “pink stone of Mendicino” used for centuries to build buildings of prestige in Cosenza and its surroundings.
Demonstrating the key role of Mendicino in production of raw silk in the 1800s, the museum houses an old spinning mill. It develops across the three storeys used for working the silk, depositing and drying the cocoons. Two cylindrical stoves on the ground floor, running on wood and coal, provided the drying heat for the second floor. Also on the second floor are the winding and throwing machines, the heart of the production process. The third floor housed the newly acquired fresh silk cocoons.
