Mendicino (province of Cosenza) is a small village at the foot of mount Cucuzzo, at 500m above sea level, in the Caronte river valley. The borgo, surrounded by olive trees, wheat fields and vineyards, includes medieval architecture, 19th century palaces and developing neighbourhoods.
The Castello neighbourhood stretches along the slope, running from piazza del Duomo – location of the Parish Church of St. Nicholas of Bari with bell tower – to the little Church of St. Catherine. The neighbourhood features ancient houses surrounded by medieval walls and elegant late 19th century buildings. The clock tower, built in 1907, stands in an elevated position and can be reached by climbing 132 steps dug out of the rock.
Places of interest in the village include the Dynamic Silk Museum, which demonstrates the borgo’s weaving tradition, the Tre Valloni River park which conserves ancient rural buildings and a botanical garden.
