The former psychiatric hospital L’Osservanza in Imola (BO) was built in the 1800s to accommodate the lack of beds in the existing psychiatric hospital, the “Asilo Psichiatrico”. An architectural and therapeutic jewel, it hosted the 1874 Psychiatric Congress. Following the Basaglia Law in 1978 patients were no longer accepted and the structure closed definitively in 1996.
Extending over approximately 12 hectares, the complex has symmetrical two-storey pavilions, once used for patients, and a tree-studded green park. Footpaths wind around the pavilions culminating in the centre in viale delle Palme, outlined by 61 tall palm trees.
