Considered one of "Italy’s most beautiful borgos”, Dozza is located south of Bologna on a hilltop that dominates the valley of the Sellustra river and slopes gently towards the via Emilia.
The historical centre has conserved a typical spindle shape and medieval appearance, encircled by ancient walls and dominated by the imposing Rocca (fortress) commissioned and built by Caterina Sforza towards the end of the 15th century, on the site of previous fortresses, and converted by the Malvezzi-Campeggi family into a noble residence at the end of the 1500s remaining such until 1960.
Painted walls, with over one hundred works created by prestigious contemporary artists, make the borgo an open-air museum and bring colour and atmosphere to the historical centre. Features of the centre include the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Piscina, built in the 12th century and housing a 1492 panel by Marco Palmezzano; the Rivellino, where the 17th century gateway to the borgo is hollowed out; and the Rochetta whose origins date to the 1300s.
