The ancient borgo of Castelvetro stands 18km south of Modena in the Apennines foothill and mountain range, not far from the river Panaro. Piazza Roma, the heart of the village, was created relatively recently when all the buildings north of the castle, except the towers, were destroyed to create an open area overlooking the valley below. A checkerboard of black and white slabs paves the centre of the square.
Palazzo Rinaldi, the Torre dell’Orologio, Torre delle Prigioni and Palazzo Municipale all stand on piazza Roma, also known as piazza della Dama. Palazzo Rangoni faces the Parish Church; built with the castle, it suffered significant damages in the 1501 earthquake as did other buildings in the ancient borgo. Quickly restructured, it hosted the poet Torquato Tasso in 1564. Its frescoed rooms include the Sala del Tasso.
