Borgo La Scola, in the hamlet of Vimignano, Grizzana Morandi (BO), is a small and perfectly conserved medieval residential centre where time seems to stand still. The present structure dates to the 1300s and 1500s and it was originally a military outpoint that defended the monastery complex of Montovolo from Lombard invasion. The name Scola actually derives from the Lombard Sculca which means guard post.
The Maestri Comacini transformed the old towers into civic residences and started the expansion of the borgo beyond the defensive walls. The borgo still features about ten towers, incorporated into or flanked by the main buildings, some of which are linked by hanging corridors. The majestic Scola cypress tree is particularly impressive, its height of 25m and over 700 years of age making it a symbol of nature and the borgo.
