The building of the Istituto di Riposo per la Vecchiaia (known as the Ospizio dei Poveri Vecchi) in Turin was ordered in 1880 by the Ospizio di Carità to compensate for the obvious inadequacy of the ancient structure in the centre of town. Crescentino Caselli was commissioned with the project and provided with a piece of land - on the present-day corso Unione Sovietica – that was some distance from the residential centre at the time. He built one of Turin’s most imposing 19th century buildings (25,000 m2) with four, parallel, three-storey pavilions standing symmetrical to a narrower central pavilion with a two-storey wing connecting the facades of the pavilions.
Today the buildings house university faculties, health service clinics and the offices of the Municipality of Turin although three storeys of one pavilion are presently empty.
