The tragic story of Karl Marx’s younger daughter was shot in Rome, Piedmont and Belgium. The 1800s architecture of Turin, and its environs, helped reconstruct Victorian London and a ranch in America. The eleven day shoot included the following locations: Turin’s Istituto di Riposo per la Vecchiaia (known locally as "Poveri Vecchi"); Miradolo Castle with its Neogothic greenhouse and English park; the Royal Certosa of Collegno, in particular Piazzale Avis, via Martiri XXX Aprile, the Aula Hospitalis and the ancient pharmacy which were used in a scene that foreshadows the tragic ending; Villa Cimena in San Raffaele Cimena; La Mandria Regional Park, in particular Borgo Castello in Venaria Reale, Cascina Vittoria and Villa dei Laghi in Druento.
In Rome, the interiors for the homes of Karl Marx and Eleanor were built at Cinecittà Studios, while the delta of the Tiber River at Fiumicino was the setting for Engels’ funeral on the boat.

Eleanor is Karl Marx’s youngest daughter. Among the first women to link the themes of feminism and socialism, she takes part in the workers’ battles and fights for women’s rights and the abolition of child labor. In 1883 she meets Edward Aveling and her life is crushed by a passionate but tragic love story.
