Gemma and Diego are in Rome desperately trying for a child: before they move to a proper apartment, they live in a temporary place on the river Tevere. They share an experience in Sarajevo, where they met during the winter Olympics of 1984. The outbreak of war in the ex-Yugoslavia affects them both and they decide to travel there to help their old friends. Initially, the situation does not appear worrying, their friends are living in a sort of commune, built in the Cavallerizza Reale in Turin, setting for many dramatic moments in the siege as is the ex-Manifattura Tabacchi. The revelatory finale is set in 2009 with Gemma and Pietro on Curzola, an island in Croatia. Here, gazing at the Adriatic that separates her from Italy, Gemma will make peace with her past.
