Built on 16th century ruins, Palazzo Spadaro Libertini is one of the oldest palaces in Caltagirone. (CT). The incomplete façade, with traces of typically 18th century decoration (festoons), looks onto via San Bonaventura, while two storeys in the rear overlook a carruggio and were once used as the servants’ quarter.
The reception rooms are on the piano nobile or second floor which is accessed by a typically Baroque monumental staircase in Comiso stone, illuminated by Baroque oculus windows that overlook the inner courtyard. The staircase to the right of a large entrance leads to a square inner courtyard on a 16th century layout.
The reception rooms include 5 imposing halls and a striking entrance. The entrance, known as “the castle” because of a 12th century stone boundary wall which provides a medieval atmosphere, leads to a square space with 15thcentury raw stone columns and a Baroque cupola which provides access to the first hall of the Crests (approx. 35 m2) which is entirely frescoed with the arms of the Libertines of St. Mark. The hall of the Crests leads to an enfilade of a further 3 rooms: the hall of the Marbles, the Yellow room and the Pink hall or hall of Mirrors. Next to the Hall of Mirrors is the Blue hall accessed by a double door.
The building is part of the Dimore Storiche Italiane circuit.
