Dedicated to the theme of ice, the Messner Mountain Museum Ortles, one of Reinhold Messner's five mountain museums, is housed in a modern underground structure in Solda, hamlet in the municipality of Stelvio, in the Solda valley. It stands at 1,900 m above sea level, at the foot of the Ortles, which was marked on the famous 1774 map of Tyrol by Peter Anich as the "end of the world".
The museum explores the terror of ice and darkness, the myths of the snowman and the snow lion, white outs and the third pole, in a journey through 200 years of history and the tools invented for use with ice, skiing, ice climbing and arctic expeditions. The MMM Ortles also houses a vast collection of paintings with views of the Ortles.
