Located on the Plan de Corones (2,275 m), on the edge of the most spectacular scenic plateau in Alto Adige, the Messner Mountain Museum Corones is dedicated to traditional mountaineering, a discipline that has shaped and been decisively shaped by Reinhold Messner.
The breath-taking view of the Alps enjoyed from the distinctive modern building designed by Zaha Hadid is an integral part of the museum experience: it extends in all four cardinal directions beyond the provincial borders, from the Lienz Dolomites in the east to the Ortles in the west, from the Marmolada in the south to the Zillertal Alps in the north.
In the museum mountain, architectural form seems to merge with the surrounding environment. This is why concrete was the chosen material for the external and internal cladding, as no other material lends itself so well to fusion in so many forms. The colour of the concrete and the building itself, mostly underground to intrude as little as possible into the landscape and avoid further construction on the summit, fit naturally into the surrounding mountain landscape.
