The South Tyrol Museum of Nature in Bolzano is housed in the former customs house of the Austrian Emperor Maximilian I, a Gothic building dating to the 16th century.
The museum offers the opportunity to travel through the history, biology and culture of the South Tyrolean region and its natural environment and, in addition to the permanent exhibition, regularly organizes temporary exhibitions on various themes.
The exhibition is divided into two blocks: the geological evolution of the landscape and the natural environments of South Tyrol. The museum’s attractions include a large living anthill and the coral reef aquarium (with 9,000 l of water) which also houses the jellyfish aquarium. The aquarium is a living demonstration of what the coral reef was like in the Triassic era, about 230 million years ago.
