An ancient Turkey oak in the hamlet of Sant'Angelo in Amatrice (province of Rieti) is one of the largest and oldest in Italy. This powerful ‘patriarch’ has survived strong earthquakes thanks to its network of roots, in part 20+ metres deep, which is one reason why huge trees like this are known as “the earth’s armour”.
