Bagni di Lucca is one of the most famous areas in the Garfagnana area (province of Lucca), which extends from the Apuan Alps to the main ridge of the Northern Apennines.
Bagni di Lucca was well-known even in Roman times for its thermal baths. Later a destination for pilgrims travelling the via Francigena, it became even more popular in the 19th century thanks to the interest of Maria Anna Bonaparte, Napoleon’s sister, who had the baths modernized by the most famous architects of the time.
Places of interest include: the casino, dating to 1838 and recognised as the first in Italy; ponte delle Catene (bridge of Chains); the Palazzo del Circolo dei Forestieri and the Demidoff Chapel.
