Given the presence of abundant forest for firewood and water to power production in the area of montagna pistoiese, the ruling Medici family chose it to be the metal-producing centre for the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
The Papini Ferriera (Ironworks) of Maresca (Pistoia), documented as being active as early as 1388, was restored and transformed into a museum in 2016. The structure, a prestigious example of industrial archaeology, belonged to the Papini family and was in use until the late 1980s. The metalworks house two fixed wooden mallets, three forges, mechanical machines used for working, a hydraulic wheel, a wide range of tools and some of the articles produced here.
