The imposing Archdeaconal Church of Santa Maria Nascente rises in the centre of Agordo (Belluno). Built over the remains of a previous Romanesque church, it owes its current appearance to restoration completed in 1852 by the architect Giuseppe Segusini, which was commissioned by the noble, art-loving de' Manzoni family.
External features include two identical bell towers and a rear dome, very rare elements in mountain churches. The interior boasts works by artists who were also very popular in Venice and Rome, including Andrea Brustolon, whom Honoré de Balzac dubbed "the Michelangelo of wood".
The altars include those dedicated to Santa Lucia and Santa Barbara, patroness of miners, bomb squads and firefighters. The latter is a well-made copy of the altar located in the Church of Santa Maria Formosa in Venice. Sculptures include a statue of Albino Luciani, chaplain of the church who later became pope John Paul I.
