The Cathedral of Santa Maria Matricolare in Verona, the principal place of Catholic worship in the city, was built on the ruins of an early Christian church (4th-9th centuries BCE) and has been modified numerous times since.
The tripartite facade with triangular buttresses is an unusual mixture of the Gothic and the Romanesque with large double windows and a central rose window. An imposing bell tower, 75m high, rises on the left.
The church is laid out in Romanesque style, with late-Gothic interiors dating to the 15th century: there are three naves under cross vaults supported by imposing sheaf-shaped pilasters in Verona red marble.
The piazza del Duomo outside features many other buildings including the Palazzo del Canonicato (partially rebuilt in 1948), which houses the chapter library of Verona Cathedral, one of the most important ecclesiastical libraries in Europe.
