Porta Nuova was built in the early 1500s by Michele Sanmicheli as an imposing entrance to the historical centre of Verona. At the time, the Venetian Republic was carrying out a comprehensive renovation of the city’s defence system, combining military requirements with artistic considerations including the replacement of the Scaliger gate of Santa Croce.
The internal facade in tuff rock features a rustic ashlar arch, in an imposing Doric frame, beneath a triangular tympanum with the city’s crest. The outer facade initially had only one Doric order arch in white stone; the Austrians later opened up two side entrances.
