The protected area of the Parco dei Cento Laghi in Monchio delle Corti (Parma) offers an incredible combination of nature, culture and history. With small settlements and hilltop villages, placid pastures and uncontaminated woods, the park has a unique heritage of floral and faunal biodiversity in the heart of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park.
Crossed by the long path of the Alta Via dei Parchi, it has a variety of habitats which punctuate the surrounding environment, stretching from the hilly valley floor of the Parma and Cedra rivers to the highest peaks (1,800+ m a.s.l. of mount Sillara).
Where ancient glaciers once stood, today there are peat bogs and splendid glacial lakes with clear, transparent water which have largely maintained their natural appearance such as lake Santo, lake Verde and lake Ballano. Centuries-old chestnut groves dot the valleys that have been sculpted by time and flowing mountain streams.
In the higher altitudes, various herbaceous species and small groups of silver fir, spruce and yew survive amidst the beech woods, evoking a vision of decidedly more northern climates. This variegated environment offers a natural habitat to many animal species characteristic of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines, including wolf, golden eagle, roe deer and wild boar.
