The Vena del Gesso Romagnola is a long chalk rise that, like the flaky clay badlands around it, extends for about 20km, never more than a kilometre in width, crossing the municipalities of Casalfiumanese, Borgo Tossignano and Fontanelice (BO) and Casola Valsenio, Riolo Terme and Brisighella (RA).
This unusual landscape is characterised by significant Karst phenomena, a vast system of caves (grotta della Tanaccia, grotta di Re Tiberio), sinkholes (abisso Fantini, abisso Mornig) and resurfacing streams (rio Gambellaro, rio Stella). The area is furrowed by the four Apennine mountain streams that flow here: Santerno, Senio, Sintria, Lamone.
The chalky-sulphuric formation has marked the surrounding landscape, influencing the microclimate of the four valleys and the history and life of the human inhabitants: it is a natural and historical resource that surprises and fascinates those who venture through the paths of Park of the Vena del Gesso Romagnola on foot, horseback or mountain bike.
North of the Vena is a strip of low hilly badlands, made of clay dating to the Pliocene Epoch, with arid wide plains, areas subject to landslides, shrubby clumps and small wetlands in the bottom of the valley, alternating with cultivated areas, fruits, vines and olives.
