Gorizia Castle is the ancient heart of the city. Located on a highpoint, the castle offers a spectacular panoramic view of Gorizia and the surrounding area.
Dating to the 11th century, it has been adapted several times, with the addition of bastions and towers, and used for different functions, as an administrative centre, a barracks and a prison. The castle was bombed during WWI. Painstaking reconstruction in the 1930s gave the castle its fascinating medieval air today.
It houses the Museum of Medieval Gorizia which displays interesting handcrafted reproductions of the bladed weapons used in the Middle Ages. The music room houses perfect reproductions of ancient instruments whose melodies can be heard through the use of modern technology.
Among those who worked on the castle's defensive structures was Edmond Halley, discoverer of the famous comet.
