Villalta Castle, in the municipality of Fagagna (Udine) is the most important medieval manor in Friuli. Located in a dominant position over the plain, it is an obligatory stop on an excursion in this most beautiful, and romantic, part of the hill. Its history is lost in the mists of time, as attested by the Roman foundations and traces of a fortified settlement. The oldest document referring to the castle dates to 1158.
Besieged, destroyed and rebuilt between 1200 and 1400, a major expansion in 1500 gave it the monumental appearance that characterizes it today. For centuries, it was owned by the Lords of Villalta-Caporiacco, Counts of Torre, a noble family in the Patriarchate of Aquileia, to which it gave three Patriarchs.
The double enclosing walls with Ghibelline battlements, patrol walkways, defence towers and picturesque, romantic inner courtyards all bear witness to the past greatness and strategic importance of the castle. The gate tower retains the slits for the drawbridge chains. A large garden of centuries-old olive trees, fruit trees and countless other plants surrounds the castle walls.
