Miramare Castle in Trieste was the residence of the Habsburg Archduke Ferdinand Maximilian and his wife Charlotte of Belgium. It stands in an enchanting position on the rocky promontory that extends into the gulf of Trieste. It is more an example of a 19th century princely residence than a classic castle, the result of the eclectic style that was prominent in the architecture of the time.
Built between 1856 and 1860 on commission from Archduke Maximilian of Austria, later Emperor of Mexico, the complex, a revisitation of a medieval fortress, is strongly influenced by Romantic taste. The Archduke personally supervised the design of the building and the creation of the vast park (over 22 hectares) that surrounds it which features English and Italian gardens, a wealth of rare plants, sculptures and small ponds and descends in wide terraces to sea level.
The castle has over 20 rooms: Maximilian’s rooms, including the bedroom with a nautical cabin theme, and the throne room are particularly notable.
