The Castle of Spessa stands elegantly in the heart of the Gorizia Collio, in Capriva del Friuli, surrounded by the greenery of a magnificent Italian garden and is now home to a wine and golf resort.
A noble residence since the 13th century, ownership of Spessa Castle passed through several illustrious families from the 16th century: the Dorimbergos, the Rassauers and then the Della Torre Valsàssina family, who owned it for more than 300 years. Over the centuries, the castle has welcomed illustrious guests including the famous writer and adventurer Giacomo Casanova and Wolfgang A. Mozart's librettist, Lorenzo Da Ponte.
Ancient in origin, the garden of Spessa Castle has endured through the many events that have affected the manor. Remodelled and rebuilt several times over the centuries, it currently has an Italian layout, created in the 19th century by Baron Demetrio Economo di San Serff of Trieste. The entire hilltop is a bona-fide arboretum, featuring oaks, Italic cypresses, holm oaks, maples, oaks, lindens, plane trees, sophora plants, mulberries, photinias and catalpas and exotic species such as the Judas Thorn.
Discovered only in 1987 during renovation work, a WWII bunker lies beneath the castle at approximately 18 meters below ground. With a constant temperature of 14 degrees, the bunker is the ideal place for refining the estate's fine wines.
