An evocative complex of ruins, Caneva Castle (Pordenone) dates to the year 1000 and, for centuries, was the seat of a small peasant community loyal to the Patriarchate of Aquileia. It stands in a strategic and dominant position on a rocky spur of Col de Fer, offering a magnificent view of the surrounding valleys and mountain ranges. It is believed to have been built partly with Roman-age materials, near an earlier Roman watchtower.
Today the parts of the defence wall and some towers are still visible. Inside the walls is the small 11th century Church of Santa Lucia, formerly dedicated to San Salvatore, and an interesting bell tower built on the old access tower to the castle with a beautiful bas-relief of the Lion of St Mark above the door.
