A city of bookshops and taverns, with a mysterious name and many faces, Udine is both popular and refined, convivial and cultured. Capital of the medieval Patria del Friuli, its most ancient history is fused with the legend of Attila building the castle hill that still dominates the historic centre today.
A city visit begins at the castle museums and continues into the centre to admire the masterpieces of Tiepolo and Casa Cavazzini, an elegant gallery of modern and contemporary art.
From spectacular piazza Libertà (demonstration of the long bond between Friuli and the Republic of Venice), medieval alleys, amidst picturesque irrigation ditches, lead to piazza Matteotti, an “open-air salon” surrounded by arcades, where the people of Udine love to stop for a coffee or the unmissable evening aperitif.
