The history and culture of Sacile (Pordenone) are linked to the Livenza river. In the "garden of the Serenissima", as this town is known for its Venetian atmosphere, buildings harmoniously coexist with the elegant palazzi, often in lagoon style, reflected in the waters of the river.
Gathered near are the Cathedral, dedicated to St. Nicholas, patron saint of the city and of river navigation, was built on the site of the previous construction between 1474 and 1496, under the direction of Beltrame and Vittorino da Como; the Chapel of the Madonna della Pietà, begun in 1611 following a miraculous event two years earlier; and the piazza del Popolo, lined by beautiful porticoed buildings.
The numerous 16th century buildings make Sacile a Renaissance city par excellence: splendid examples are the municipal loggia and Palazzo Ragazzoni Flangini Billia. Many houses feature ornamental motifs in Renaissance or Baroque style, which contribute to making Sacile a delightful town in which to get lost, crossing little bridges and alleys and discovering charming views.
