The strada vicentina or Napoleonica (Napoleonic) as the inhabitants of Trieste call it, is a 5km long route that links Opicina with Prosecco and offers many areas of natural beauty and dazzling viewpoints over the city and gulf of Trieste. The route winds across the natural landscape, surrounded by vegetation (it is possible to choose between a wide gravel road or narrower paths through the wood), in parts open to the sun and protected from the Bora wind.
The path gets its name from a legend which holds that Napoleon’s army was the first to walk down it: it is, however, more likely that the alternative name “vicentina” derives from the engineer Vicentini who designed the route.
The departure point – piazzale dell'Obelisco in Opicina – is easily reached by car. It is also possible to depart from the end of the route in Prosecco, where a large car park is situated. Near Prosecco, the path emerges from the vegetation and heads through the rocks where several vertical rockfaces have become a popular destination for free-climbers of all abilities.
