Realmonte (AG) owes its name to the Latin for “mountain of the king”, Mons Regalis, of feudal origin.
Between the beach and the chalky mountains that enclose the coast is the scala dei Turchi, a fine grain clay and limestone cliff of pure white that has been moulded into a natural staircase, its shape wavy and irregular with soft rounded lines, by the wind and waves over thousands of years. The cliff top offers a view from the coast of Agrigento to capo Russello.
The steps on the wall (“scala”), protected from the wind, facilitated the incursions of Saracen pirates (the “Turchi”) who, in the 1500s, would then reach dry land and sack the local settlements.
