Palazzo delle Albere, situated in the neighbourhood of the same name designed by Renzo Piano, and houses the Trento branch of MART - Museo di Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto, with the best of the pre- 1918 permanent collection and a programme of temporary exhibitions focussing on 19th-century artists from Central Europe. The exhibition timeline concludes with the end of WWI, with works by Venetian artists from Ca’ Pesaro: Umberto Moggioli, Tullio Garbari, Umberto Boccioni, and Gino Rossi.
An exhibition space since 1981, first as the contemporary art section of the Provincial Art Museum and then, from 1987, as a branch of MART, Palazzo delle Albere takes its name from the double row of poplars that once lined the road leading from the centre of the city to the villa on the outskirts. It was commissioned by the Madruzzo Prince-Bishops in the mid-16th century, and was the setting for several sessions of the Council of Trento. Acquired in 1969 by the Province of Trento, it was then renovated.
The building has a square layout with 6m x 20m sides, four corner towers and a moat. On the first floor is the big hall: it was once frescoed with episodes from the life of Charles V, but today only depictions of the 12 months remain. The second floor features Renaissance frescoes of imaginary landscapes with ruins and castles. Other paintings in the building depict the seven liberal arts, the four cardinal virtues and the three theological virtues.
