Soave Castle (Verona) is a military construction typical of the middle ages which dominates the vast plain below from a hilltop, with walls leading from the central towered keep to encircle the entire borgo of Soave. The walls also extend from the keep to form three courtyards and a little raised courtyard.
To the north is the main entrance, with drawbridge, near the tower of St. George, which leads to the first courtyard with the remains of a small church with three apses dating to the 10th century. A portcullis gate leads into the second courtyard known as the Madonna’s courtyard because of a 1321 fresco of the Virgin Mary. The third courtyard houses the keep, probably used as a place of prison and torture. There are also the ruins of a two-storey house, a well and the remains of a kitchen and weapons workshop.
After a long history of war, struggle, invasion and abandonment, skilful work in the late 1800s restored the castle’s original external appearance.
